what's under the bonnet
What's New:
September 2010

Eight new Broadcaster School Radio Stations are being delivered this month; our best month ever and proof that Educators believe in the transformational power of Live School Radio. Designed completely around what young people told us they wanted and not the old kit that the radio industry doesn't want anymore, we have proved the value of Student Voice. We warmly welcome our new customers and wish them well with their live School Radio Broadcasts. Live School Radio has Never Been This Much Fun!

Russell's recommended reads for this term
This
title has been around for a couple of years if you missed it, now's the time to
read it. How to break all the rules and get away with it, Russell loves
this book. Once you pick it up you just can't put it down, Richard writes
with such passion. A great short read.
Richard Gerver's "Creating Tomorrow's Schools Today" foreword by Sir Ken
Robinson - this is a brilliant read. "The Element: How Finding
Your Passion Changes Everything" by Sir Ken Robinson also highly
recommended, this book will give you the feeling that you can tackle anything,
this book could just change everything!

Russell has also updated his recommended technology list for the Autumn Term
with a review of his new iPad, a brilliant new app called
Tune-In Radio, and the Roberts WM 202 Portable Wi-Fi Internet Radio

on-screen button.
On-Site Training - included in the cost of the system
The Broadcaster is delivered on the same day that you have
your training, our customers often ask us how they should go about creating a
sustainable radio project. We have found the following very successful in
creating that sustainability. Create a small team of
broadcasters taken from across all of your age groups, this team will form the
core-radio group and can have as many as 50 members depending on your needs and
the size of your establishment. The training session is focussed on this
group who will then train other learners in due course. Educators are
trained at the end of the day. We strongly recommend that you allow your
learners to manage and run your radio station within the defined boundaries and
rules that the editorial team create with your input.
Flying Fader Control Surface on the desktop
The fader control desk has powered
faders so that they can be controlled by the software as well as moved directly
by the user. Each fader channel can be put on and off the programme and
record bus without lowering the fader, something that systems costing much more
than ours are unable to do. By taking the presenter microphone and one of
guest microphones off the programme an interview can be recorded while the
audience is listening to something else. There are many useful
applications for this feature, any change from the desk is instantly executed by
the system. Each channel has a master gain and pan control so characters
in your radio play can be panned off centre for that realistic live performance
feel.
The cable patch-bay and mains RCD safety switch, Ethernet and on-air light connections
Setting
up is simple, all of the connections are clearly marked, using a patch panel
allows the possibility of splitting the components, this is how we are able to
offer a separate control/patch unit, fader desk and accessory case making our
system truly portable and adaptable. External audio sources can also be
plugged in, professional recording studios, instruments, and MP3 players if you
want!
The Accessory trunk completely foamed out for safe transport
Unpacking
and packing are as easy as it can possibly be with the specially designed foamed
out accessory case. Everything has its own place so you never forget to
pack anything away. The Accessory Case also doubles as a height extender,
when placed between the base until and the control desk it increases the height
of the system by 300mm. Perfect for those wanting to stand and broadcast
rather than sit. All of the interconnect cables are stored in a cable tray
(not shown) that sits on top of the foam, the outer case then locks on top and
forms a complete seal protecting the components. The cases can also be
locked if necessary, a small luggage-type pad-lock is required for this (not
supplied), you may consider doing this if your Broadcaster is stored in an
un-supervised or public space.
All three sections stacked
together ready for shipping or storage
When
all of the cases are stacked ready to be transported they look like this, they
interconnect and lock for safety. The Accessory Trunk is shown on the top,
in the middle is the fader control surface and on the bottom is the patch panel,
computer system and flying fader and keyboard storage draw. The wheels are
lockable and permanently fitted to the bottom unit. The system can be
wheeled around your establishment on a flat surface in this state or while the
system is setup with the monitors fully extended. The system is fully DDA
compliant and fits through any doorway suitable for a wheelchair user. We
recommend that only adults attempt to move the system as manual handling
procedures should always be followed. These are fully explained when your
Broadcaster is delivered together with our recommended top tips for setting up.
